Deuteronomy 11 – Love and Obey

Good evening y’all. Today we are studying Deuteronomy chapter 11.

Be blessed 🙂

When we say we love someone, we will naturally want to do things to please them; to make sure they are happy. So it is with our relationship with God. If we truly love him, we will try as much as we can to make sure we obey Him and do the things that are pleasing to Him.

I noticed Moses kept on repeating the obedience bit. In the NLT version, the word “obey” was used 7 times…that’s to show how important obedience is. We enjoy a lot of blessings when we obey and do things Gods way.

I like how the Message version puts verses 22- 25…..

“That’s right. If you diligently keep all this commandment that I command you to obey—love God, your God, do what he tells you, stick close to him—God on his part will drive out all these nations that stand in your way. Yes, he’ll drive out nations much bigger and stronger than you. Every square inch on which you place your foot will be yours. Your borders will stretch from the wilderness to the mountains of Lebanon, from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea. No one will be able to stand in your way. Everywhere you go, God-sent fear and trembling will precede you, just as he promised”.

This promise has a condition of obedience attached to it. If we do our bit, then God will fulfil the promise He has given.

I pray God will give us the grace to continually obey Him and live a life thats pleasing to Him. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Today, lets choose a life of obedience.

Deuteronomy 7 – A God you can depend on…

Good evening y’all. Today we are studying Deuteronomy chapter 7 🙂

Be Blessed 🙂

As i started reading the chapter, the first thing that caught my attention was the use of the phrase; “When the lord your GOD…“. It suddenly occurred to me that our God is a God of certainty; whatever He says will surely happen. It might tarry a bit in our own eyes, but it will surely come to pass.

It might seem like that promise is delaying or seems impossible, I believe God wants to remind us today that it will surely come to pass. Its a matter of WHEN and not IF. GOD will surely bring to pass all that He has spoken and promised concerning us. Num 23: 19 says He is not a man that He should lie…..

I also noticed God is the one who will deliver their enemies into their hands and not them. Same applies to us, God is the one who will do the fighting, we don’t need to worry. All we need to do is to keep believing, trusting and obeying Him and i believe without a shadow of doubt that God will come through for us.

God told the Israelites to completely destroy the foreign nations and their Gods. God didn’t want them to get polluted or distracted by the way of life of the foreign nations. He knew they were a easily led astray bunch of people 🙂 so He tells them in verse 2-3 to make sure they completely destroy all.

When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters” (V2-3 NLT)

How can we apply this verses to our lives today? I believe God is calling us to a place of complete surrender; a place where we have completely let go of all the things we hold in higher esteem than God; a place where we are completely sold out to God, not looking elsewhere for satisfaction but only unto God.

And why does God require this from us? V4 tells us..

“For they will lead your children away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and he will quickly destroy you” (NLT)

Failure to get rid of all that is not godly in our lives will get us in trouble. Before we know it, our hearts are being drawn away to ungodly things. This is why Paul urged us in Romans 12, to not conform to the pattern of this world. Though we live in this world, yet we are not of this world, therefore our lives should reflect our Heavenly Father.

God is a Holy God and He desires that we His children be holy just as He is. He had chosen us as His own, not because we deserve it but because He loves us dearly.

“For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure. The Lord did not set his heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.”. (v6-9 NLT)

“Do this because you are a people set apart as holy to God, your God. God, your God, chose you out of all the people on Earth for himself as a cherished, personal treasure. God wasn’t attracted to you and didn’t choose you because you were big and important—the fact is, there was almost nothing to you. He did it out of sheer love, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors. God stepped in and mightily bought you back out of that world of slavery, freed you from the iron grip of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know this: God, your God, is God indeed, a God you can depend upon. He keeps his covenant of loyal love with those who love him and observe his commandments for a thousand generations”. (v6-9 MSG)

As we go about our day today, lets ponder on Gods love for us and our response to His love. Lets remind ourselves that God is able to do that which He has promised us. The question is are we willing to take His hand and follow His instructions or we content to keep trusting in our own strength and futile efforts?
